ULTRA_HAB : VERNACULAR DIFFERENTIATION_progressed our previous studies into a more developed state. Taking leads from the work presented at USyd in Semester 1 2009, the studios explored an ecology of parametric relationships, overall building form and architectural systems. Advanced digital design media was employed in three different design studios, resulting in architectural manifestations that investigated formation, spatiality and execution. Architectural program was developed for extreme contexts. The studios explored how architectural design, which integrates advanced digital media, mediates extreme environments in transition. Generative and animation software, alongside fabrication techniques, were incorporated at various scales, and through various applications, to assist in developing the architectural designs. -
USyd Ultra-FAB Pavilion
Sydney Design 09 Festival 1-16th August Forecourt Wilkinson Building University of Sydney ‘Has anyone ever checked the toxicity levels of 3D printers, or the gases given off during the laser-cutting of a piece of plywood?’ (Steele 2008) Digital modelling and digital fabrication enables virtual form-making and the direct output to physical artifacts. Nevertheless, what are the environmental impacts of these Ultra_Fab tectonics? University of Sydney Architecture staff and students will demonstrate the creative potential, and the impact, of digital fabrication through the ultra_fab pavilion. Waste and re-use will feature alongside the new and improved, to demonstrate that architecture is as much about the final object, as it is about the sustainable choices designers make along the way. -

BEYOND LIMIT STATE: BUILDING ECOLOGIES IN EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS_explored ‘re-forming’ (re-housing) the devastated Victorian hinterland, in particular an area around Kinglake. The students were asked to engage parametric media in the development of poetic architectural narratives, which took into account the recent bushfire crisis, program, site and the integration of digital media in the early stages of design. Design Tutors: Sarah Benton, Dirk Anderson, Damien Butler, Willea Ferris. Technical Assistance: Gabriele Ulacco. -
Building Ecologies: Resin Prototypes
As a part of the Master's digital design research stream, students were asked to create digital model files for testing the Resin Rapid Prototype Printer - thanks to Gabriele Ulacco and Damien Butler for many late nights and some great pictures -

DISCREPANCY : STATION_a common theme for the studio-groups: “Station and Discrepancy" The studio group addressed (computational) concepts of architectural design creation influencing the recent development of architectural production. The nature of the studio was partly experimental, partly realistic and develops unconventional solutions. Coordinator: Marc Aurel Schnabel
